Forbidden Drive

Classic out-and-back gravel trail through the heart of Philadelphia’s Wissahickon Valley Park following Wissahickon Creek for miles of shaded running with constant water views. Forbidden Drive is one of Philly’s most iconic running routes — wide, mostly flat, and closed to vehicle traffic, making it ideal for easy miles, long runs, recovery days, and marathon training alike. Along the route you’ll pass historic bridges, dense forest, and landmarks like Valley Green Inn, with plenty of opportunities to branch off onto more technical singletrack trails if you want extra elevation or terrain. The crushed gravel surface is soft on the legs and the scenery changes beautifully throughout the seasons.

Getting there

The most popular access points are near Valley Green, Bells Mill Road, and Northwestern Avenue. Good parking options include Northwestern Ave Parking Area, Bells Mill Road East Parking Lot, and Wissahickon Valley Park Chestnut Hill Parking. Valley Green is a great central starting point but fills quickly on weekends. SEPTA Regional Rail and multiple bus routes also provide convenient access to the park. For shorter runs, Ten Box and Lincoln Drive trailheads are popular southern entrances, while Northwestern Avenue works well for longer out-and-back efforts.

Schuylkill River Trail
The Schuylkill River Trail (SRT) is one of the best multi-use trails in the Philadelphia region. It follows the Schuylkill River through urban Philadelphia, Manayunk, Conshohocken, Valley Forge, Oaks, and Phoenixville, offering a mix of river views, historic sites, parks, and town centers. The trail is mostly paved between Philadelphia and Valley Forge, making it great for biking, running, walking, and casual rides. West of Valley Forge toward Phoenixville you'll encounter some crushed stone sections but they're still very bike-friendly.

Roslyn Park
Roslyn Park is a small but well-kept neighborhood park in Abington Township that works well for short easy runs, walking loops, recovery miles, and casual outdoor workouts. The park features a paved walking path loop around athletic fields and Sandy Run, offering a flat and beginner-friendly route that’s especially convenient for local residents looking to get in quick mileage without dealing with traffic or crowded trails. While the main loop is short — roughly a half mile to three-quarters of a mile depending on the route you take — it’s easy to stack multiple laps for workouts, intervals, or stroller runs. The park also includes basketball courts, ball fields, playgrounds, and a skatepark, giving it an active community atmosphere throughout the day and evening. Great flat loop for tempo runs and repeat workouts.
